THE TILERY, SOLOBEGHEAD OR SOLOHEAD, LISHENNAMALAUSA, CO. TIPPERARY -
William McDowell was born about 1814, said to have occurred in the area of Jerritzpass, now in Northern Ireland..
Land owned by the Duke of Derby, also known as Lord Stanley.
The land across the road from the house. This is where the clay for the tiles were taken from.
TIPPERARY TOWN - HOUSES
Photo from 2008. This is St Michael's Street (previously Nelson Street). St Michael's Church can be seen at the end of the street. Houses numbered 60 to 65 were listed in William's will as being left to each of his daughters or their children and grandchildren. William had built these in 1870. he numbering in the street in 2008 didn't help us to identify the exact houses but it is probable they are adjoining homes and not opposite one another.
An article from the Clonmel Chronicle in 1870 regarding the development of these houses.
SCOTS (PRESBYTERIAN) CHURCH, TIPPERARY TOWN.
By 2008, the Scots Church had been converted to the offices of Webster Insurance.
The McDowell and Fraser families were members of this church and several McDowell and Fraser children were taught school subjects by the minister here, Reverend John Homes. It would possibly have been in the Manse that the lessons were taught. The location of the Manse is not known. In later years he married some of the children. Even later he presided over the funerals of several family members in Dublin.
The graves of the McDowell family are to be found in the Cullen graveyard some miles from Solohead. See the post on this blog titled Headstones in Ireland.
This is a transcription of the William's will sent to me by a descendant of one of the other McDowell girls.
