Miller Headstones in Comely Bank Cemetery, Edinburgh.

Three generations of Catherine are listed on this headstone on Comely Bank Cemetery. Catherine Macdonald, wife of Alexander Miller, my great-grandfather, Catherine Mary Robertson (neè Miller), only daughter of Alexander and Catherine plus Catherine Miller, my dad's sister who I believe died of scarlet fever in 1914 just 18 months before the death of her father, John Lucas Miller, who was killed at the Battle of Loos, September 1915.

This photo, above, taken in 2008 before the headstone was cleaned, is included to indicate the location of the headstone. In the background is an obelisk shaped memorial and in the distance, between the headstone and the obelisk, a church spire.

In 2025, Larissa Miller visited this cemetery to view the headstone and found a very new one with more names of the family listed. They are all members of John's sister's family,(that of Kate).

The new headstone in Comelybank Cemetery.

This headstone commemorates Charles and Mary Miller (neé Cameron). Charles was the uncle of my dad and brother of John Lucas Miller. Charles was named on the records of George Heriot's School as dad's guardian/contact. Charles was said to have also paid dad's £10 fee to travel with the Dreadnaught Boys organisation to migrate to Australia.

Charles and Mary Miller's only son apparently married a Catholic woman, Alison Simpson.  They are buried in an area a little removed from the other Miller headstones

Interestingly, my reading of family stories indicate that two previous generations of Millers changed religion. John Lucas Miller (Snr) and his wife Mary Jean McDougall, changed from Protestant to Catholic. Decades later, their son, Alexander and wife Catherine changed from Catholic to Protestant after Catherine was displeased with the treatment of her children, Charles in particular, by the nuns at the Catholic school the children attended.

My dad's mother's parents, Malcolm Maccrimmon and his wife Kate, Catherine Nicolson, plus their eldest daughter Effie (Euphemia) are commemorated on a headstone in Dunvegan cemetery. These photos were taken in 1972 when Glen and I visited Roddy and Ishbel Maccrimmon at the family home, 23 Husabost, Borreraig, west of Dunvegan.

Roddy's parents, Peter Hugh Maccrimmon and his wife, Mary Mackinnon were buried in Glendale, a little west of Husabost. Malcolm and Kate's eldest daughter, Effie (Euphemia), was the mother of Peter Hugh.  I haven't been able to visit this site.  The photo is courtesy of Roddy.
